That record was held by the 2024 New York City Marathon, which had 55,646 finishers. Consequently, the London Marathon earned a Guinness World Records title. This title recognizes the most participants in a single marathon. Furthermore, the event’s popularity is clear. A staggering 840,318 people applied for a spot in the 2025 race. Thus, it solidified its status as the world’s most popular marathon.

How Many Marathon Runners?

The London Marathon uses staggered start times. This accommodates many participants and different race categories. The mass start for most runners typically begins at 09:30 AM. However, elite athletes, including wheelchair racers and professional runners, start earlier. Their staggered intervals usually commence from 08:30 AM. This phased approach ensures a smoother flow. It helps at the starting line and throughout the entire course.

The London Marathon officially starts in Greenwich Park. Specifically, it begins along Charlton Way. This iconic starting point in southeast London has three designated areas: Blue, Green, and Red. Each area has specific access points. Runners should plan their journey based on their assigned start area. Public transport is the most convenient option. Who Won London Marathon 2025?

The 2025 London Marathon featured impressive elite athlete performances. In the men’s elite race, Sebastian Sawe of Kenya claimed victory. His winning time was 2 hours, 2 minutes, and 27 seconds (2:02:27). In the women’s elite race, Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia triumphed. She set a new women’s-only marathon world record with a time of 2 hours, 15 minutes, and 50 seconds (2:15:50). The wheelchair races also saw dominant performances. Marcel Hug of Switzerland won the men’s event. Meanwhile, Catherine Debrunner, also from Switzerland, took the women’s title.
